Remoissenet Père et Fils, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “La Garenne”
Rock-strewn and windswept, La Garenne resembles a quarry, and the Chardonnays that spring from it are some of the most archetypal Puligny-Montrachet wines of all: crystalline, balletic, mesmerizing. Leave it to Remoissenet to get in on this action. Working closely with a partner-grower in La Garenne that farms according to organic and biodynamic principles, they extracted a micro-batch of today’s 2020 from the pebbly limestone soils of this coveted Premier Cru.
Remoissenet’s prized fruit is harvested by hand and fermented on indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels (45% new) of assorted sizes. The wine is aged in those same barrels for over a year before bottling. It is tension-filled, beautifully textured, peak-drinking Chardonnay; everything you could ask for in Premier Cru Puligny-Montrachet from a sun-filled vintage. The knees of white Burgundy connoisseurs will buckle while drinking this, so I suggest sitting down when there’s a glass in hand.
