Pewsey Vale, “The Contours” Riesling
Considered one of the great Riesling vineyards in the world, The Pewsey Vale Vineyard was established in 1847 producing some of Australia’s first cool-climate wines. Their Rieslings were exported back to England where they won numerous awards in prestigious wine shows of the era. The Hill Family bought the property in the early 1960s and embarked on a major vineyard replanting. The winery still maintains its focus on Riesling which has garnered tremendous accolades locally and internationally over the years. The “Contours” block ripens slightly later than the rest of the vineyard. It’s all free-run juice that is wild-yeast fermented, bottled young, and aged for 5 years before being released. This 2013 bottling is the first to be fully certified organic and biodynamic. This effort has a long way to go to hit its peak. We recommend a multiple bottle purchase to enjoy some now and lay down a few for another four to six years. Pale straw in color with green highlights. Intense lemon aromas and white flowers jump out of the glass. While zippy and fresh with bottle age comes richness. It has great palate length and depth accentuated with fresh lime juice with back notes of toasted brioche, sage, and citrus marmalade. This is a delightful aromatic wonder that will pair well with a range of foods from fish to poultry. Cheers Mate!
